Welcome!
The Hampton Roads Cool Communities Coalition is a collaboration of citizens and businesses working with local government to do their part in reducing global warming. All across Hampton Roads, cities and counties are taking action with cost-effective and proven clean energy solutions, including energy efficiency technologies, cleaner vehicles, renewable power, smart growth land use planning and greater transportation choices. These innovative solutions benefit public health, reduce energy use and waste, help cut our dependence on dirty fossil fuels, and save taxpayer and consumer dollars.
What are Cool Communities?
Cool Communities are cities and counties that have made a commitment to stopping global warming by signing the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement, Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Initiative, or joining the ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability program. With this pledge, each city or county commits to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions levels 7% from their 1990 levels by the year 2012.
After signing the pledge, the next step is to work toward accomplishing the specific goals outlined in the pledge. Our work with any one Hampton Roads community may involve developing a carbon inventory and creation of a climate action plan. It may involve creation of a citizen task force. Next steps may include a push for specific policies for green buildings, green fleets, or renewable energy.
Go Green Virginia
Many of our Hampton Roads communities participate in the Virginia Municipal League's "Go Green Virginia" challenge, a "friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local government and the broader community". Local governments will earn "green points" by implementing or adopting policies and actions listed.
Cool "Go Green" Communities
The Hampton Roads Cool Communities Coalition works to make all our cities and counties Cool "Go Green" Communities. These are cities and counties that have signed a pledge to curb their global warming emissions, developed climate action plans, and are taking the necessary steps to enacting policies and initiatives that make our entire Hampton Roads area cleaner and greener.
